ENT – Otolaryngology
ENT – Otolaryngology Surgery focuses on operative care of the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck. CSTs in ENT support a wide range of procedures including tonsillectomies, sinus surgery, thyroidectomy, airway reconstruction, and microsurgery of the ear. This specialty requires precision, strong anatomical knowledge, and familiarity with delicate instruments used in airway, endoscopic, and head & neck procedures.
Role of CSTs
- Prepare ENT instrument sets, endoscopic equipment, and microsurgical tools for head and neck procedures.
- Assist with patient positioning, prepping, and draping for airway, sinus, thyroid, and ear surgeries.
- Maintain sterile technique during delicate procedures involving nerves, vessels, and airway structures.
- Anticipate surgeon needs during dissection, exposure, suctioning, and micro‑instrument handling.
- Manage endoscopic towers, sinus navigation systems, and powered instruments such as microdebriders.
- Support anesthesia teams during airway management and emergent airway interventions.
- Handle specimens including tonsils, thyroid tissue, lymph nodes, and biopsies with proper labeling.
- Assist with accurate counts and efficient room turnover during high‑volume ENT cases.
Essential Skills
- Strong understanding of head, neck, airway, and sinus anatomy.
- Proficiency with ENT instruments including micro‑tools, scopes, and powered devices.
- Ability to anticipate surgeon needs during delicate dissection and nerve‑sparing procedures.
- Skilled in setting up and troubleshooting endoscopic towers and navigation systems.
- Competence with suction, electrosurgery, and microdebrider systems.
- Ability to maintain sterile technique during airway‑adjacent procedures.
- Effective communication with surgeons, anesthesia, and nursing teams.
- Precision in handling small, delicate instruments and implants.
